ZYN and Velo are two of the biggest nicotine pouch brands in the world and they often get mentioned in the same breath. They are not interchangeable though. They suit quite different users, and picking the wrong one is an easy way to end up with a pouch that is either far too mild or far too strong.

Here is how they compare on strength, flavor and price, based on the range we carry here at PouchFix.

The short answer

  • Choose ZYN if you are new to nicotine pouches or prefer light to strong strengths. At PouchFix, ZYN runs from 3mg to 9mg per pouch, with calm and clean flavors.
  • Choose Velo if you want strong to extreme strength, especially intense mint. At PouchFix, Velo runs from 8mg to 17mg per pouch.
  • Price is practically the same for both, so let strength and flavor decide.

Who makes ZYN and Velo?

ZYN was created by Swedish Match, the Swedish company behind several of Scandinavia's best known snus brands. Swedish Match has been owned by Philip Morris International since 2022. ZYN is the best-selling nicotine pouch brand in the United States.

Velo is made by British American Tobacco (BAT), one of the largest nicotine companies in the world, and is sold in a long list of markets across Europe and beyond.

Both brands are produced to strict standards, so quality is not really what separates them. Strength and flavor are.

Strength: the biggest difference

This is where the two brands really part ways. ZYN covers the lighter half of the scale, while Velo starts where ZYN tops out and goes all the way up to extreme.

Strength level ZYN Velo
Light (up to 4mg) Apple Mint Mini 3mg None
Mild to regular (4 to 7mg) Cool Mint 6mg, Red Berry Fizz 6mg None
Strong (8 to 10mg) Citrus 9mg, Apple Mint 9mg Lime Flame 8mg, Crispy Peppermint 10mg
Extra strong (10 to 14mg) None Freezing Peppermint 10.9mg, Orange Spark 10.9mg, Freezing Peppermint 14mg
Extreme (15mg and up) None Freezing Peppermint 17mg

In practice, ZYN suits a much wider group of people. If you are new to pouches, or if you are happy somewhere between light and strong, ZYN almost certainly has something for you. If you have built up a high tolerance and want a pouch that really hits, Velo is the more relevant brand.

Not sure where you sit on the scale? Our nicotine pouch strength guide walks through every level, from light to extreme.

Flavor: calm and clean vs cold and intense

ZYN keeps things classic. Cool Mint is a calm, clean mint that doesn't blow you away, Citrus reminds us of a cold glass of lemonade, and Apple Mint pairs crisp green apple with a smooth mint finish. Red Berry Fizz is the most playful of the bunch, with sweet and tangy berry notes and a slight tingle. The sweetness is restrained across the range, which makes ZYN easy to use all day.

Velo is mint-heavy and turns the intensity up. Freezing Peppermint is properly cold and long lasting, and one of the best mint pouches on the market if you ask us. Crispy Peppermint is the lighter, cleaner alternative. On the fruit side, Orange Spark tastes a lot like orange soda, tingle included, and Lime Flame pairs bright lime with a warming, spicy undertone.

If you are after something more unusual, neither brand is the obvious first stop. Have a look at Loop, home of the cult favorite Jalapeno Lime, or Après for flavors like Lemon Curd and Ice Tea Peach.

Price

At PouchFix, ZYN and Velo are priced almost identically. Buying several cans of the same product lowers the price per can on both brands. Keep an eye on our Short Date Deals too, where you can sometimes pick up both brands at a lower price.

Our verdict

ZYN for most people. Velo for high-strength.

If you are new to nicotine pouches, or you use them at light to strong levels, ZYN is the better choice. The strength range is broader and the flavors are easy to get along with. If you want extra strong or extreme mint with maximum cooling, Velo's Freezing Peppermint range is hard to beat, and ZYN simply doesn't compete at that level.

Frequently asked questions

Which is stronger, ZYN or Velo?

Velo, at least in the range we carry. The strongest ZYN at PouchFix is 9mg per pouch, while Velo goes up to 17mg with Freezing Peppermint. Velo's mint flavors also feel more intense because of the strong cooling effect.

Can I switch from ZYN to Velo?

Yes. Match the mg as closely as you can rather than jumping straight to the top. If you use ZYN at 9mg, Velo Lime Flame 8mg or Crispy Peppermint 10mg are sensible first steps. Freezing Peppermint at 10.9mg feels stronger than the number suggests, thanks to the cooling.

Where do ZYN and Velo overlap?

Only in the strong range, around 8 to 10mg. ZYN Citrus and Apple Mint (9mg) sit right next to Velo Lime Flame (8mg) and Crispy Peppermint (10mg), which makes this the best place to compare the two brands directly.

Are ZYN and Velo tobacco-free?

Yes. Both are all-white nicotine pouches made without tobacco leaf. They do contain nicotine.

Do ZYN and Velo pouches expire?

They carry a best before date rather than an expiry date. Read more in our guide: Do nicotine pouches expire?
