Nicotine pouches are about as simple as it gets: no smoke, no lighter, no spitting. But if you've never used one, a few basics make the first experience a lot better. Here is everything you need to know, step by step.
Who this guide is for: adults who already use nicotine and want to try pouches. If you don't use nicotine today, don't start. Nicotine is highly addictive.
The short answer
Take one pouch from the can and place it between your upper lip and your gum. Leave it there. You'll feel a tingle after a minute or two, which is normal. Most people keep a pouch in for 20 to 40 minutes, then throw it in the trash or in the top compartment of the can, which is made for discarding pouches when you don't have a trash can nearby.
Step by step: how to use a nicotine pouch
1. Open the can
New cans usually have a plastic seal or wrap around them. Remove it, then open the lid. All our cans have a small compartment on top of the lid. Keep that in mind, because that's where your used pouches go.
2. Take one pouch
Pick up a single pouch with your fingers. One is enough. If you're new to pouches, there's no reason to use more than one at a time. This is an advanced move that seasoned pouch users might do when they've built up a very high tolerance.
3. Place it under your upper lip
Lift your upper lip and slide the pouch in between your lip and your gum, on the left or right side. Press it gently into place with your tongue or finger. It should sit flat and still. Upper lip is the standard spot for pouches. It's the most comfortable and the most discreet.
4. Leave it alone
Don't chew it, suck on it or move it around. The pouch does its job sitting still, releasing nicotine and flavor through your gum.
5. Expect a tingle
After a minute or two you'll probably feel a tingle or a light burn on your gum. That's normal, especially with mint flavors and stronger pouches. It usually settles after the first few minutes, and it tends to get milder as you get used to pouches.
6. Take it out when you're done
Most people keep a pouch in for 20 to 40 minutes, but there's no fixed rule. The flavor fades over time, and when it's gone, most of the experience is too. For your first few pouches, shorter is fine.
7. Throw it away properly
Put the used pouch in the lid compartment or throw it straight in the trash. Please don't drop pouches on the ground. :-)
How long should you keep a nicotine pouch in?
Around 20 to 40 minutes is typical. Some people take theirs out sooner, and some keep a pouch in for over an hour. Once the flavor has faded, most people simply take it out.
A good rule for beginners: take it out as soon as you've had enough. If you ever feel dizzy, queasy or simply uncomfortable, take the pouch out right away and choose a lighter strength next time or take it out sooner.
Upper lip or lower lip?
Upper lip. Pouches are designed to sit under the upper lip, where they stay put and are barely visible. Under the lower lip you tend to produce more saliva and the pouch is more likely to move around.
Why does my gum tingle or burn?
The tingle comes from the nicotine being absorbed through your gum, and cooling flavors like mint add to it. A few tips if it feels too intense:
- Switch sides each time, so the same spot gets a break.
- Try a lighter strength. Our nicotine pouch strength guide explains every level.
- Try a non-mint flavor. Fruity and sweet flavors usually feel gentler on the gum.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting too strong. The most common beginner mistake. Start light, around 3 to 4.5mg per pouch. See our best nicotine pouches for beginners.
- Chewing the pouch. Pouches are not gum. Leave it still and let it do its job.
- Using the same spot every time. Alternate between left and right.
- Keeping it in too long the first time. You don't need to finish the full 30 minutes on your first try.
- Leaving the lid open. Pouches dry out and lose flavor once the can is open. Close it properly and store cans somewhere cool. More in Do nicotine pouches expire?
- Leaving cans within reach of kids or pets. Nicotine pouches are for adults only. Keep cans somewhere children and pets can't get to them.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you put a nicotine pouch?
Between your upper lip and your gum, on the left or right side. It should sit flat and still, and you shouldn't need to touch it again until you take it out.
Do you spit with nicotine pouches?
No. Unlike some other oral nicotine products, nicotine pouches don't require spitting. That's one reason they are so discreet.
Can you swallow a nicotine pouch?
No. Pouches are not meant to be swallowed. Always take the pouch out and throw it away when you're done. If you happen to swallow one you don't need to worry, it's not immediately dangerous. It will simply pass through your system, but try not to swallow them at all.
How do I know which strength to start with?
If you're new to pouches, start light, around 3 to 4.5mg per pouch, even if you smoke or vape today. Our beginner guide lists our favorite light pouches, and the strength guide covers every level.
Is it normal for the tingle to fade?
Yes. The tingle is usually strongest in the first few minutes and tends to get milder as you get used to pouches.
Are nicotine pouches the same as snus?
No. Traditional Swedish snus contains ground tobacco. The all-white nicotine pouches we sell contain no tobacco leaf. They do contain nicotine.
